www.peoplestandup.ca House Speaker Peter Milliken has ruled against the Harper government on two issues that have the opposition parties champing at the bit ahead of a possible election. On Wednesday afternoon, Milliken said the government breached parliamentary privilege by refusing to provide all documents the Standing Committee on Finance requested detailing the full cost of its crime bills and tax cuts. Milliken said MPs are entitled to know the initiatives’ exact costs. The government has declined to reveal the full estimates, citing cabinet confidences. MPs find the government in contempt of Parliament, penalties could include suspension from Parliament. Brison called the speaker’s rulings “a remarkable condemnation of the Harper government’s lack of accountability to Parliament, lack of transparency to Canadian taxpayers.” Brison told CTV’s Power Play Wednesday evening that the government is asking MPs to approve legislation without knowing its full costs, “and that’s wrong.” “We have a responsibility as Parliamentarians, a fiduciary responsibility, a constitutional responsibility to respect every hard-earned tax dollar that is sent to us and to ensure that we know the cost of the legislation we are voting on,” Brison said.
